WØVFW Veterans Net (VetNet)

We have a weekly Veterans Net on the WØVFW (145.270MHz) amateur radio (ham) repeater. In the ham world, a "net" is like a radio conference call where participants check in, make announcements, and discuss whatever is on their minds. The first net on Thursday, Jan 14 2010 at 1900hrs (7pm) on 145.270MHz and every week thereafter.

The purpose of this net would be to support any veterans organization by:
  • Making regular announcements for the participating organizations
  • Allowing third-party traffic to promote Amateur Radio licensing and WØVFW club membership
  • Providing on site broadcastings to further cooperation from other American Legion and VFW posts.
  • Providing another venue to deliver announcements for these organizations.
Ultimately we would like to work toward a point where we have at least one licensed ham at every VFW and American Legion post within range of our repeater.  These hams would be the official liaisons between that post and WØVFW.  That liaison will be responsible to:
  • Make announcements on location for their post on the weekly netset up members of their post to talk on the radio third party to make announcements and reports
  • Encourage members of their post to test for their amateur license and join WØVFW
  • Report on their post's progress at WØVFW meetings
We have WØVFW Trustee and Liaison Officer Dennis Godbey (KFØTG) posted at the Wichita VFW Post 3115 to make announcements on site each week.  Dennis is a VFW Member, sits on the Post house committee, a WØVFW member, and holds his Extra license.

We have WØVFW Liaison Officer Jennifer Walker (KDØIWD) posted at the Derby American Legion Post 408 and VFW Post 7253 to make announcements on site each week.  Jennifer is a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 408, the American Legion Riders Post 408, and has had her Technician's Class amateur radio license since October of 2009.

We have WØVFW Liaison OfficerLarry Skinner (NØWVD) posted at the Wichita American Legion Post 256 to make announcements on site each week.  Larry is the webmaster for the American Legion Post 256, and has had his General Class amateur radio license since September of 2009, and has been licensed since 2003.

Net Control can  rotate, but usually is called by WØVFW President, Brandon Trube.  Brandon is a member of the VFW Men's Auxiliary, the Riders Club and the Radio club at Post 3115, and has had his Technician's Class amateur radio license since May of 2009.

Not only do amateur radio operators listen to these nets but many people listen in on scanners as well!  If you are a member of a VFW or AL post or have connections to any Vet organization that may want to participate on the net, please email brandon@trube.biz.  We will post liaisons on our site as we get volunteers at http://www.vfw3115.org/w0vfw/officers
