VFW Pepsi Refresh Project

posted Jun 3, 2010 10:32 PM by Brandon Trube

The VFW Foundation is in the running to receive a $250,000 "Pepsi Refresh" grant, but it all depends on you. Won't you help us win?

Beginning June 1st. please visit http://www.refresheverthing.com/ReturnTheFavor

Your vote for the VFW Foundation's "Return the Favor" project will support the unmet needs of the U.S. military
personnel and their families. For example, since 2004, the VFW Foundation has provided over $3,400,000 in direct
free financial assistance to families in urgent financial circumstances for rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle
repair, medical expenses and food/basic aid. In many instances, our intervention has stopped evictions and
foreclosures. We constantly hold "welcome home" and "send off" events for troops to boost morale. We've
distributed 10,000,000 long distance telephone cards and we pay for innovative Internet "free call days" so our brave
troops in Iraq and Afghanistan can call home on a regular basis.

You can vote once a day during the month of June.

The two organizations that receive the most votes win.

Tell friends and family, forward ths email to everyone you know.

Won't you take a few seconds to show our troops and those they love how much our nation appreciates their service
and sacrifice? They are counting on you, please don't let them down!

"They have done so much for us... Now let's Return the Favor"

When the music stopped

posted May 25, 2010 11:55 PM by Brandon Trube

For those who are unaware, at a military theater, the National Anthem is played before every movie.

From a Chaplain in Iraq :

I recently attended a showing of 'Superman 3,' here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place. Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen?
Even here I would imagine laughter, as everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start. But here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording left off: 'And the rockets red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.'

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you! Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad. For many have already paid the ultimate price.

Updates to the Post

posted Dec 30, 2009 2:18 PM by Brandon Trube   [ updated Jan 1, 2010 4:26 PM ]

We made some changes to the computer network at the post last night. I want to thank Patrick Schneweis for the donation of a bunch of equipment to the Amateur Radio club (W0VFW) and the Post.
  • We added a WIRELESS mouse and Keyboard to the Post computer
  • We added a wireless access point for better wireless coverage back by the stage
  • For the Amateur Radio Club
    • We cleaned up the Radio Room
      • Removed any unused wiring
      • Connected a KVM switch so the Mouse, KB and Monitor controls the HAM PC and the Echolink PC
      • Added speakers to the HAM PC
      • Filed any extra paperwork away to de-clutter the desk
  • Changed the wireless access code for the network to be easier to remember
NOTE: For anyone who connects to the wireless network, there are two to choose from. VFW3115 (in the east side of the building) and W0VFW (in the west side for the building). The wireless access code for both is the same.

The wireless access code (WEP) is available at the bar

News from MAJ Chris Shaner

posted Dec 27, 2009 4:31 PM by Brandon Trube   [ updated Dec 27, 2009 4:44 PM ]

Greetings, Comrades.

The Army has once again made a liar out of me. My orders changed, and I ended up in Balad, Iraq instead of Afghanistan. I arrived safely on 20 December after 3 weeks at Fort Benning, GA. I am assigned to the support operations section of the 402nd Army Field Services Brigade, a field unit of Army Material Command.

Thanks to a VFW post in Florida, everyone in the unit had a stocking filled with goodies to open on Christmas. The chow hall was decorated to the max to give everyone holiday cheer even if far from home.

I hope all is well on the home front. Everything is fine here so far, we’ve only been mortared 4 or 5 times this past week (as opposed to 4 or 5 times daily during my 2003-2005 deployment here!)

Please give my greetings to everyone at the Post. Several of you had given me email addresses, but I unfortunately have lost them. I’d love to hear from everyone.

My snail mail address is:
MAJ Chris Shaner

Sincerely,
Chris Shaner

Highlights of the visit from our Commander in Charge.

posted Dec 15, 2009 9:54 PM by Brandon Trube   [ updated Dec 15, 2009 9:55 PM ]

The visit from the VFW National Commander, Kansas State Commander, District Commander, and surrounding Post Commanders and Officers were met with open arms and warm felt adulation. CiC Thomas "Tommy" Tradewell presented the mass of patrons with an eloquent, non rehearsed, speech of all the key issues' that effect our Veterans here and abroad.

Some of the key issues CiC Tradewell spoke of was the current national budget and securing funding for our Veterans Administration. He spoke of the importance of the Ladies and Men's Auxiliary units on how they mirror the efforts of the Posts' mission objectives. His spirit and drive, concerning our POW/MIA programs, is echoed worldwide with his productive meetings with members of China and Russia.

A standing ovation proceeded the recognition of Mr. Thomas J. Sanders, Medical Center Director of the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. Mr. Sanders spoke about the many Veterans the VAMC is currently providing health care for and the numerous Veterans currently receiving disability. It is one thing to see all what our local VAMC provides to us Veterans - but it was a true honor "hearing" what Mr. Sanders had to say.

The members of VFW Post 3115 give our utmost respect and gratitude to those whom contributed to and attended this historical event!

World War I Memorial in Kansas City

posted Dec 12, 2009 2:44 PM by Brandon Trube   [ updated Dec 16, 2009 10:39 AM ]

Senator Roberts recently sponsored legislation to designate the Liberty Memorial and Museum in Kansas City as the National World War I Memorial. Currently although more than four million Americans served in WWI, there is no national recognized memorial honoring their service. Senator Roberts said, “Liberty Memorial has been a fitting national tribute to World War I since 1921. As a former Marine, honoring our nation’s veterans, past and present, is of the utmost importance. WWI veterans and their families deserve a recognized national memorial, and our nation needs to be reminded of this Great War for generations to come. Liberty Memorial should be named the official national memorial for WWI.”

Following the 1918 armistice, the Liberty Memorial Association raised $2.5 million for a memorial for World War I to be built in Kansas City, MO. The site was dedicated in November 1921 with the ceremony attended by Allied Commanders. After three years of construction, the 217 foot tall memorial was dedicated in 1926 by President Calvin Coolidge before a crowd of 150,000 people. In 2004, the Liberty War Memorial Museum was dedicated the “National WWI Museum,” which is the only public museum dedicated to the history of the Great War.
